Why Wondering Jews?

Wondering Jews, Inc. is a nonprofit organization with the goal of connecting people who are physically or geographically challenged with the  wide variety of educational, service, and faith activities in the local West Virginia Jewish congregations. I am Harry M. Rubenstein, and having experienced both challenges, I understand the importance and power of inclusion.

I grew up as part of a Jewish family in Thomas, West Virginia during the 1960’s and 1970’s.  Practicing our faith was challenging as the closest synagogue was a two-hour drive over narrow mountain roads.  When I began practicing law in 1984, my practice took me all over our state, and one of the many beautiful things I discovered is a vibrant and enduring Jewish community throughout West Virginia.

I am now retired from practicing law due to progressive MS and its resulting physical disabilities.  However, with help from my wife, our seven adult children, and a strong connection with my faith, I lead a rich and blessed life.  My inspiration for Wondering Jews began with my own adult faith journey.

Several years ago, I began Torah study lessons with my friend, Rabbi Zalman.  To accommodate my lack of mobility, Rabbi Zalman made weekly visits to my home.  Then, during the pandemic, my longtime friend, Rabbi Urecki allowed me to join the classes and services at B’nai Jacob in Charleston, WV.  I connected with other congregations as well when virtual became the norm.   I continue to connect and interact with these congregations as the online offerings have grown and continued.

I believe there are many who would welcome the opportunity to engage more with our congregations.  Wondering Jews exists to facilitate participation with the extensive educational, service, and faith opportunities available throughout our state by providing information and points of contact for those looking for in-person participation or those looking for virtual participation and inclusion when they are unable to physically attend.  I look forward to sharing this journey of participation and inclusion with you!
